Libon is a voice-over-Internet Protocol and instant messaging application developed for Apple Inc.’s iPhone by France Telecom’s subsidiary, Orange Vallee. The application can also be used on iPad and iPod Touch and will be released for Android in Spring 2013. Libon users can call and instant message their contacts for free on any 3G or Wi-Fi network. The app also offers visual voicemail and custom voicemail greetings based on contact groups. Although Orange developed Libon, it is available for free on the iTunes AppStore in 90 countries, including in countries where Orange does not have a presence, such as the United States.

The name is an abbreviation of the original name "Life is Better ON". All versions of the app have included "ON" or "Libon" in their names.

History

Libon was launched in beta for testing in November 2009 before the LeWeb conference. The first version of the app was called "ON Address Book", and was only available on Android.

In March 2011, Orange launched "ON Voicefeed" at the DEMO conference - a visual voicemail iOS app enabling its users to personalize their voicemail greetings by recording them or type them (text-to-speech feature).[1]

On the 21st of November 2012, Orange added the VOIP feature, updated the UI of the service and rebranded it to "Libon".[2] The new service was announced by Stéphane Richard at the Hello! show.[3]

Features and functionality

The Libon app has two versions: free and premium. In the free version, users get free app-to-app calls, free instant messages, free visual voicemail and three contact groups for customized greetings. The free version is advertising-supported software. In the premium version users get an hour of free international calls to land lines and mobiles in 30 countries, as well as unlimited contact groups, unlimited voicemail greetings and no in-app advertisements. The premium version is available for a monthly subscription on the iTunes AppStore.

Countries and languages

Libon is available on the iTunes AppStore in 90 countries. The app is currently available in three languages: English, French and Spanish. Voices are available in the app to read typed greetings, and these voices can read typed greetings in these three languages.

Awards

The Life Is Better ON app for Android won first place in the commercial category at the 2010 MEX Awards.[4] It also was named a runner-up for the MEX User Experience Innovator of the Year at the same ceremony.
