Kimia atmosfer

Kimia atmosfer adalah cabang ilmu atmosfer yang mempelajari kimia atmosfer bumi dan planet-planet lain. Bidang multidisiplin ini melibatkan kimia lingkungan, fisika, meteorologi, pemodelan komputer, oseanografi, geologi, vulkanologi, dan disiplin-disiplin lainnya. Riset-riset yang dilakukannya semakin berhubungan dengan bidang ilmu lain seperti klimatologi.

Komposisi dan kimia atmosfer penting karena beberapa alasan, tapi terutama adalah karena interaksi antara atmosfer dan organisme hidup. Komposisi atmosfer bumi telah berubah karena aktivitas manusia dan beberapa perubahan ini berbahaya bagi kesehatan manusia, panen, dan ekosistem. Contoh masalah yang telah ditangani oleh kimia atmosfer termasuk hujan asam, smog fotokimia, dan pemanasan global. Kimia atmosfer mencari pemahaman penyebab masalah-masalah ini, dan dengan memahami teori dibalik masalah-masalah tersebut akan mencari pemecahan yang memungkinkan untuk diuji dan sekaligus mengevaluasi perubahan pada kebijakan pemerintah.
