Saeed Al-Owairan (also spelt Owairan; Arabic: سعيد العويران; born 19 August 1967) is a former Saudi Arabian international footballer. Owairan played his entire career for Al-Shabab, a Saudi club based in Riyadh. He became very famous internationally after his goal in FIFA World Cup 1994 against Belgium, and was also chosen as best player in Asia same year.[1]
International career
He played for the Saudi national team at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, in which he scored a goal against Belgium that was later voted the 6th best in FIFA's Goal of the Century rankings,[2] thus earning him the nickname "The Maradona of the Arabs". FIFA has selected Owairan among the top 22 players in that World Cup.[citation needed]
Overall, he scored 24 goals in 50 international matches and also competed in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.[3]
