International Data Corporation (IDC) is a market research, analysis and advisory firm specializing in information technology, telecommunications and consumer technology. IDC is a wholly owned subsidiary of IDG. IDC is headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts and has over 1,000 analysts worldwide covering technology and industry opportunities, trends and forecasts in over 110 countries.[1] In 1992 IDC organized it’s first conference to help educate IT and telecommunications professionals about the latest developments in technology. Today, IDC organizes more than 200 conferences in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America and North America annually. IDC's Insights line of businesses provide industry-focused advice for IT buyers in the Financial, Government, Health, Retail, Manufacturing and Energy verticals.

Patrick J McGovern founded IDC in Massachusetts with a friend, Fred Kirch, in 1964 after a UNIVAC executive complained to him about the lack of market research information available on the emerging computer industry.[2] At the beginning, the company produced a computer industry data base and a newsletter, EDP Industry & Market Report.

Criticism

Various IDC reports and forecasts were criticized for deficiencies in methodology. Notable cases include:
