In the context of a Microsoft Windows computer network, a stand-alone server is a server that neither belongs to nor governs a Windows domain; the server may, however, belong to a workgroup (a peer-to-peer network of Microsoft Windows computers).[1]
A Windows Server computer that governs a Windows domain is called a domain controller.
