Here (stylized HERE, formerly Nokia Maps (2011–2012) and Ovi Maps (2007–2011)[3]) is a free web mapping platform by Nokia, available for web browsers and as a mobile app for a variety of devices. Its features include map search, satellite maps, a versatile journey planner with support for public transport routes, 3D maps, real-time visualization of traffic congestion and pre-downloadable offline maps.

History

The Nokia Maps software began its life in 2001 as Smart2Go, a generic 3D-map interface for access to tourist information on mobile terminals. It was developed by an EU Consortium named TellMaris.[4] Nokia gained the rights to the software when it acquired the German route planning software company Gate5 in August 2006. It then made the Smart2Go application free to download.[5][6][7][8][9] Nokia Maps was expanded in October 2007, when Nokia acquired Chicago-based digital map supplier Navteq to build further on their Smart2Go mapping application.[10][11][12][13] Maps is part of the Ovi brand of Nokia's Internet based online services. Ovi Maps provides offline maps which have the advantage of not requiring an active data connection or even network coverage on the handset. Maps can be loaded onto the phone with Nokia Ovi Suite[14] (for Microsoft Windows only) or through a web browser[15] (on any operating system), with recent versions, directly over-the-air.

On 22 January 2010, Nokia released a new version of Ovi Maps (v3.03) that allowed free turn-by-turn navigation for many of its cellphones.[16][17] Nokia Ovi Maps have currently 27 million users, which is expected to double. Nokia has over 84 million GPS-enabled devices in the market[citation needed]. Nokia has established one of the largest audiences for mobile location-based services. By the end of 2011 the market is expected to be getting toward 200 million.

In April 2011, Nokia released a beta version of 3D maps[18] that covers 20 cities in the world. By August 2011, the coverage has expanded to 23 cities. The 3D maps are said[by whom?] to be produced by combining LiDAR scanner data for 3D modeling with HD aerial photos for realistic texture mapping. The software runs as a plugin to the web browser. Unlike the 2D maps which were designed for Nokia mobile devices, the 3D maps require hardware supports that are not usually available on mobile devices. Nokia Maps version 3.06 is available for the S60v5 and Symbian^3 devices, and supports pinch-to-zoom in the latter operating system.

In May 2011, Ovi Maps was renamed to "Nokia Maps" when Nokia streamlined its services offering under the head brand.[19]

In October 2011, Nokia announced Maps & Drive for Windows Phone 7 (Mango), which is available on their Lumia phones – Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Lumia 800 and in 2012 the Nokia Lumia 900. However major features compared to the Symbian version are absent, such as off-line routing and text-to-speech navigation of street names.[20] These features were eventually brought over to the Windows Phone platform in 2012.

In November 2012, Nokia announced the rebranding of the mapping service as "HERE", and released a free client app for Apple's iOS-powered devices (iPad and iPhone) running version 4.3 of the operating system or newer.[21][22]

Nokia's web mapping service is available at here.com and it works on all major browsers. There is also a service specifically for mobile devices, at m.here.com, which can be accessed by HTML5-capable mobile phones and tablets, such as devices running Windows Phone 8, iOS, and some newer versions of Android.

  • City pages of over fifty popular cities showing local time and weather conditions, along with information from Lonely Planet and suggested places
  • 3D maps of 25 cities licensed from C3 Technologies[25], with routing support
  • Live traffic flow visualization

  • Heatmaps visualizing areas popular for food, nightlife, shopping and local sights in select cities

  • Listing and managing businesses (HERE PrimePlaces)
